SMEW’s roots trace back to the distinguished Nagarsheth family of Ahmedabad. The promoters are descendants of Sheth Shantidas Jhaveri (c. 1590–1659), the renowned jeweller, financier, and businessman who was conferred the title of the first Nagarsheth of Ahmedabad. His contributions to trade and commerce established a legacy of leadership, integrity, and entrepreneurship that continues to inspire the company’s values today.
This legacy was carried forward by Khushalchand Nagarsheth (1680–1748), who is remembered for protecting the city of Ahmedabad during the Maratha invasion of 1725 by paying a ransom on behalf of its citizens. The Nagarsheth name has since become synonymous with responsibility, resilience, and long-term vision.
